The Giggling Squid, Reigate

The Giggling Squid Thai restaurant arrived on the Reigate scene in somewhat dramatic circumstances – it very nearly fell down a giant hole.

During building work at the site, a floor collapsed and revealed a long lost extension of the ancient Reigate sandstone caves. The ingenious new owners turned events to their advantage, and – having made sure it’s all quite safe, of course – made a feature of the cave, which can be seen through a viewing portal in the lower floor.

Dramatic entrance aside, the Giggling Squid is a foody delight and a welcome addition to the town’s Asian food line-up. It’s part of a small chain, and their ethos is simple: the best Thai food, prepared and cooked from scratch using local ingredients as much as possible. The result is Thai food that’s fresh, bursting with flavour and well-presented.

I started with perfect steamed pork dumplings, served with a delicious tangy soy dip and my partner enjoyed excellent vegetable spring rolls which were a cut well above the usual standard. My main was simply the best green curry I’ve ever had – presented steaming hot in an individual cast-iron pot and overflowing with flavour. This was paired with sticky jasmine rice and a vegetarian Pad Thai – both top notch. My partner had the highly recommendable cashew nut and chicken stir fry. A good selection of drinks is also available, including the ‘real deal’ Chang beer – imported from Thailand and an absolute treat if you enjoy crisp, refreshing Asian lagers.

Highly recommended – it is such a treat to get fresh, tasty Thai food prepared and cooked with real care and skill.
